Amritsar Flower Show "Spring 2024" & National Seminar on Environmental Justice for Better Living from February 21-25, 2024

 

 

The Botanical and Environment Science Society (BESS), Post Graduate Department of Botany, Khalsa College Amritsar organized Amritsar Flower Show "Spring 2024" from       Feb. 21-25, 2024 which was inaugurated by S. Rajinder Mohan Singh Chinna Honorary Secretary, Khalsa College Amritsar Charitable Society and Sh. Hansraj Hans, MP, India. On the third day of the event, Feb. 23, 2024 National Seminar on "Environmental Justice for Better Living" was organized. Dr. Mehal Singh, Principal Khalsa College Amritsar extended a warm welcome to the speakers and participants of the event and sensitized the students about the various environmental problems and encourage them to live a sustainable life. Dr. Balwinder Singh, Head, P.G. Department of Botany gave an introduction about the event and explained the role of spiritual practices in creating bound with the natural resources and created awareness about the impact of our actions on the environment.

            Dr. Madhu as a co-coordinator of BESS gave brief introduction of the keynote speaker Dr. Manpreet Singh Bhatti, Professor, Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Dr. Bhatti highlighted the importance of air, water and land in our life. He said that we are responsible for depleting and polluting our natural resources. The environmental justice is the equal protection and meaningful involvement of all people in development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies and the equitable distribution of environmental benefits. According to him, the environmental justice is based on the principle that we all have a right to be protected from environmental pollution so that we can live and enjoy a clean and healthy environment. Dr. M.S. Bhatti discussed about the environmental regulations, the endangered species, the Montreal Protocol and the clean water act. The 268 participants from various institutions, schools and nurseries participated in the flower show under different categories viz. seasonal flowers, foliage plants/indoor plants, medicinal plants, succulents/cacti and bonsai. The students of different science departments showed their creativity in poster presentation and explained the importance of plants in medicine, landscaping and environment protection. The students from different institutions also participated in garland making from flowers. Dr. Prabhjit Kaur, the organizing secretary of the event appreciated the efforts and proposed vote of thanks to members of society, participants, teaching and non-teaching staff on successful organization of the event. Dr. Harjinder Singh, Dr. Rajbir Singh, Dr. Harpreet Kaur, Dr. Sushant Sharma, Dr. Maninder Kaur, Dr. Harsimran Kaur, Dr. Sonia Sharma, Dr. Pardeep Kaur, Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, Dr. Parveen Kumar Ahuja and non-teaching staff and students of the department were present in the event.
