ONE DAY VISIT TO BOTANICAL GARDEN AND HERBARIUM OF GURU NANAK DEV UNIVERSITY ON 16 FEB. 2023
Botanical and Environment Science Society, Khalsa College Amritsar has organized one day visit to Botanical Garden & Herbarium of Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar. Students of M.Sc. Botany Sem. II and Sem. IV participated in the event were accompanied by Rashpal Singh (teacher incharge, GNDU, Amritsar) and co-ordinators of the event Dr. Madhu and Dr. Sushant Sharma. The students first visited botanical museum which housed the preserved plant specimens of different groups followed by a walking tour of Botanical Garden. The Botanical garden of Guru Nanak Dev University spreads on 9 acres and laid on the basis of Bentham and Hooker's system of classification of plants and divided into different sub-sections which counts of different plant species in their respective category and our students got a chance to get familiarize with those plant species. Within Botanical Garden, students also visited plant conservatory housing different sections namely shade house, fern house, moss house. The different sections of conservatory consists of variety of medicinal plants, rare and endangered species and diversity of ferns and mosses.
Students also visited the herbarium in the department of Botanical and Environment Science where Dr. Sushant Sharma gave a demonstration of herbarium sheets preparation, their significance and relevance in the field of Botany. After all these activities, Prof. Jatinder Kaur (Head) and Prof. Satwinderjit Kaur, Department of Botanical and Environmental Science, GNDU, Amritsar, interacted with students and discuss the future prospects and importance of higher education in subject of Botany. In the due course of full day visit students learned a lot and get acquaint with the significant plant species of high economic importance.
