Inter College Flower Show and Poster Competition, Spring-2018 and Seminar on Climate Change Saga through Earth History on Feb 22, 2018 by Dr. Arun D Ahluwalia
The Botanical Society and P.G. Department of Botany, Khalsa College-Amritsar organized “Inter College Flower Show and Poster Competition, Spring-2018” and seminar on “Climate Change Saga through Earth History” on Feb 22, 2018. Dr. Mehal Singh, Principal, Khalsa College extended a warm welcome to all the attendees and stressed upon the need to prevent environment degradation due to anthropogenic activities. He encouraged the students to actively participate in activities related to awareness on climate change. Retd. Panjab University Professor, Dr. Arun D Ahluwalia, a popular speaker and activist in Earth and Environmental Sciences, delivered a lecture on climate change. Dr. Ahluwalia explained that variations in climate are caused by factors such as biotic processes, variations in solar radiation received by earth, plate tectonics volcanic eruptions and certain human activities. He explained that the primary cause of ongoing climate change is often referred to as global warming. He emphasized that planet's average surface temperature has risen about 2.0 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century which is driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and most of the warming has taken place in the past 35 years. The speaker motivated the young minds to take the initiative to go green and make efforts to do little things every day to help reduce greenhouse gases and make a less harmful impact on the environment. He stressed that taking care of the Earth is not just a responsibility -- it's a privilege. Students from sixteen colleges participated in the flower show and poster competition. Dr. Mehal Singh and Prof. Kirandeep Kaur Hundal gave away the prizes to the winners. Prof. Kirandeep Kaur Hundal, Head, PG Deptt. of Botany, Prof. Parminder Kaur, Prof. Pawandeep Kaur, Dr. Heminder Singh, Dr. Harjinder Singh, Dr.Rajbir Singh, Dr. Prabhjit Kaur and Dr. Paramjeet Kaur were present on the occasion.
