Introduction:

On 29-02-2024, a group of students from the Department of Food Science and Technology at Khalsa College, Amritsar embarked on an educational visit to MARKFED Canneries in Jalandhar. This visit was organized as part of the curriculum to provide students with practical insights into Food processing and Technology.

 

Objective of the Visit:

The primary objective of the visit was to familiarize the students with the operations and processes involved in a modern food processing unit. MARKFED Canneries, Known for its state-of-the-art-facilities, was chosen to provide students with a real-world understanding of food manufacturing, quality control, and safety measures.

 

Activities and Observations:

1. Introduction to MARKFED Canneries: Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by the staff of MARKFED Canneries. A brief introductory session was conducted to outline the history, mission and achievements of the company. Students gained insights into the scale of operations and the range of food products processed at the facility.

 

2. Guided Tour of the Cannery: The students were taken on a comprehensive guided tour of the entire cannery. The tour covered various sections, including raw material storage, processing units, quality control laboratories, packaging and dispatch areas. Knowledgeable guides explained the intricacies of each process, from the selection of raw materiaals to the final packaging of products.

3. Processing Techniques: Students had the opportunity to witness firsthand the advanced processing techniques employed at MARKFED Canneries. This included the use of modern machinery for cleaning, peeling, slicing and cooking of raw materials. The emphasis on maintaining hygiene and adhering to international quality standards was particularly highlighted.

4. Quality Control Measures: A significant portion of the visit was dedicated to the quality control laboratories. Students were shown how various tests and analyses are conducted to ensure the quality and safety of the final products. The integration of technology for quality assurance left a lasting impression on the students.
