Singh, Head, Department of Chemistry welcomed the eminent scientists and participants
from other colleges and institutions. They also introduced the seminar theme to the
participants by highlighting the importance of holding of such seminars in the college.
Principal Dr. Mehal Singh welcomed the chief guest Dr Prasad V. Bharatam and other
renowned guest speakers and thanked them for sparing their valuable time for gracing the
occasion. He emphasized that since science is growing at very fast pace so such seminars and
conferences are very essential so as to familiarize the students and faculty members with the
recent advances and developments in the related areas.
Dr. Prasad V Bharatam Professor, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, NIPER-Mohali, was
the chief guest of the event. Dr. P. V. Bharatam major research interest involves Computer
aided drug design, Anti-diabetic agent design, NO releasing agents, GSK3, PPARg, AMPK
agent design, Studies on Drug Action, Electronic Structure Studies of drugs. Dr. Bharatam.
He further added that way science has developed in the past two centuries clearly suggest that
both basic research and applied research are important. While basic research does not always
lead to immediate applications, the generation of new knowledge is critical for futuristic
applications. He also talked about the importance of electrons in drug chemistry.
Dr. Ganga Ram Chaudhary, Department of Chemistry, Punjab University Chandigarh, Dr.
Tejwant Singh Kang, Assistant Professor, GNDU Amritsar were the other distinguished guest
speakers on this occasion. Dr. Ganga Ram Chaudhary while speaking added
that understanding the basic science is important for getting thrilled for the successful
scientific findings leading to revolutionary inventions- both pharmaceutical and
technological. He further added that nanotechnology is seen as a new revolution. These were
enabled by technologies such as the combustion engine; and the transistor and integrated
circuit that led to the development of computers.

Tejwant Singh Kang, Assistant Professor, GNDU Amritsar talked about ionic liquids. He said
that the research team has utilised photocatalysis under white light in a deep eutectic solvent
to dissolve and simultaneously degrade polythene. The degraded material has been
characterized for its structure and properties via various instrumental techniques. The
reduction in molecular weight and introduction of polar functional groups in degraded
polythene are expected to be beneficial for recycling. Research scholars, faculty members and
students also participated in a poster presentation session by presenting more than 50 posters,
which were evaluated by the experts. In the valedictory function, the best posters award and
certificates were distributed to the participants by resource persons. Dr. Kultar Singh gave a
