Department of Food Science and Technology visit to Ajnala Sugar Mill, Bhala Pind, Amritsar

Introduction:

On Feb,. 3, 2024, a group of 30 (Thirty only) Food Science and Technology students from the Department of Food Science and Technology at Khalsa College, Amritsar, had the opportunity to visit the Ajnala Sugar Mill located in Bhala Pind, Amritsar. The visit aimed to provide students with practical insights into the sugar production process and its associated technologies.

Objectives of the Visit:

  1. To understand the various stages of sugar production.
  2. To observe and analyze the technology used in sugar milling.
  3. To learn about quality control measures in the sugar industry.
  4. To gain insights into the environmental and social aspects of sugar production.

Overview of Ajnala Sugar Mill:

Ajnala Sugar Mill is a prominent sugar production facility in the region, known for its advanced technology and efficient processes. The mill plays a crucial role in the local economy by contributing significantly to the sugar industry and providing employment opportunities.

Activities during the Visit:

  1. Welcome and Orientation:
  • The students were welcomed by the mill's management, who provided a brief introduction to the history and operations of the sugar mill.
  • An orientation session outlined the agenda for the visit and emphasized the importance of sugar production in the agricultural landscape of the region.

  • The students were taken on a comprehensive tour of the entire sugar production process, starting from the reception of raw materials to the final packaging of sugar products.
  • Key stages, including crushing, clarification, evaporation, crystallization, and drying, were explained in detail, with demonstrations of the machinery used at each stage.

  • The students had the opportunity to witness and interact with the latest technological advancements in sugar milling, including automated machinery for efficient processing.

4.Quality Control and Assurance:

  • The students gained insights into the rigorous quality control measures implemented at Ajnala Sugar Mill, ensuring that the final product meets industry standards and consumer expectations.
