Three Days Workshop on Applied Zoology (February 25-27, 2020)


 

 

The Zoological Society organized a three Days Workshop on Applied Zoology from February 25-27, 2020. The workshop was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Mehal Singh in the Department of Zoology on February 25, 2020. First day of the workshop was dedicated to Sericulture. S. Avtar Singh, Manager and S. Arshdeep Singh, Promotion Officer Department of Horticulture, Sujanpur provided the technical knowhow regarding the process of sericulture to the students. He also guided the students about the various subsidies being provided by the Government of Punjab to encourage the youth to adopt sericulture as an occupation.

Second day of the workshop was devoted to Apiculture. The students visited the farmer training centre, Khalsa College Amritsar where S. Jaswinder Singh, Training Officer, provided the practical hands on training regarding various practices and techniques involved in bee keeping. In the second half, a honey testing camp was organized in which officials from Agmark performed various tests to check the purity of different samples honey available in the market.

On third day, Dr. Adarsh Pal Vig, Professor, Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar interacted with the students on the topic "Vermicomposting". In his talk, he emphasized on increasing amounts of solid waste due to lack of management strategies. He stressed on the use of vermicomposting as an eco-friendly method to manage such wastes.
