The Department of Sociology, Khalsa College, Amritsar organized a guest lecture on “Multifaceted Manifestations of Violence against Women in India- A Comprehensive Exploration” on 27th October, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the seminar hall of the college under the guidance of Principal Dr. Mehal Singh, Prof. Taminder Singh, Dean Academic Affairs and Prof. Jaspreet Kaur, Dean of Arts and Humanities. It was organized to educate students about violence against women which is crucial for raising awareness and promoting gender equality. Dr. Rajni Bala, Associate Professor and Head of Sociology Department at BUC College, Batala was the key speaker who enlightened students with her stock of knowledge.

At the beginning, Dr. Rajni Bala emphasised on the historical scenario of society responsible for the occurrence of violence. According to her, violence should be seen more of a social problem rather than the matter of gender discrimination. Additionally she pointed on the fact that division of labour was meant to divide the responsibilities between male and female rather than creating the hierarchy of superiority and inferiority. She quoted recent NCRB data related  to this field in order to familiarise students with the ground reality of this problem. She also emphasised that it is not only men who are against women but the patriarchal mindset which is responsible for creating this inequality. While addressing the solutions to this problem, she made students aware about the various initiatives taken by the government in order to tackle this issue.

Lastly, an interactive session was held where the guest speaker responded to the personal queries of the students. Most of the students were inquisitive to know the underlying causes of this problem in order to have better clarity on this unaddressed issue. Dr. Sukhbir Singh, In charge of Sociology Department, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to guest speaker and all the other members of organizing committee including Dr. Jasdeep Kaur and Dr. Bharti Jasrotia The benign presence and response of students of B.A (Arts), B.A (Social Science) and other disciplines made this occasion a grand success.
