The P.G. Department of Economics , Khalsa College Amritsar  under the patronage of Principal Dr. Mehal Singh organized a guest lecture on “Food and Nutrition Security In India: Strategies and Way Forward” on 7th March, 2024. Dr. Baljit Kaur, Assistant Professor, Punjab School of Economics was the resource person. Dr. Anju Sharma, Head, P.G. Department of Economics welcomed the esteemed speaker. Dr. Baljit  Kaur, Senior Assistant Professor, Punjab School of Economics, GNDU, discussed about the meaning of food security, its various dimensions and nutrition in the context of sustainable development goals. She highlighted that food insecurity results in vicious circle of poor physical and cognitive development, low productivity and poverty. The availability and accessibility of food in India was also discussed. The speaker also explained the impact of inadequate nutrition not only on individuals but also on macro level outcomes. Food based safety nets in India were also explained by her in detail. Students and teachers participated in questions and answers sessions very enthusiastically and their doubts were cleared by the resource person.

                  Principal Dr. Mehal Singh in his address stressed upon the need and importance of food security particularly in case of India. Dr. Geetinder Mann, Associate Professor, P.G. Department of Economics presented the vote of thanks. Dr. Taminder Singh Bhatia, Dean Academic Affairs, Khalsa College, Amritsar graced the occasion. Faculty members of Economics department Dr. Saveeta, Dr. Navjot Kaur, Dr. Supreet Kaur, Dr. Seozy Bhatia and students of undergraduate and post graduate classes were present at the event.
